The swinging Text Tutorial for a motion typography technique in adobe after effects.
In this after effects tutorial you’ll learn about how to make text (typography) swing into place in a scene using 3d layers and manual key frames and parenting. The idea behind the technique is to give the text weight and substance as it enters the scene using overshooting.
If you get stuck or have questions just leave them below in the comments. Chances are someone else is having the same problem and I can only answer the questions I get asked. So ask away.
Also if you end up making something cool share it with me. It’s great to see how folks fair getting through the tutorial and it’s awesome to see what you make.
I hope you enjoy the tutorial and have a nice day.

14.06.2012 at 12:35Hey, how’s it going? I believe I have been watching your tutorial online about swinging text. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cnCTTJMwUk&feature=related
If thats not you sorry my apologies, but if it is, could you help me with the parenting aspect. I am in CS5.5 and I have all the manual keyframes set up so one line of text swings perfectly, but as soon as I parent it to another line of text with the same exact keyframes for rotation in the x direction it gets all wonky and flips up backwards behind the first line. Maybe its CS5.5 maybe its me, maybe I missed a step. If you could help me out that would be awesome.
Thanks,
Josh

14.07.2012 at 13:10Hey Josh, that’s for sure me. One of the things with parenting is you have to be careful when you parent. It’s best to move the play head to when all the objects will be in their desired end state, then parent, and then move the play head back to the beginning to see what you did.
Let me know if that helps.

03.07.2014 at 22:46Hey Evan, I am trying to make the swinging text effect, but I forgot which numbers to put into the keyframes. I understand everything else from the tutorial, and yes, there were some annotations in the video with those numbers, but my annotations no longer work. Thank you!
