White Extruded Text (like that Mockingjay Teaser Text)- Adobe After Effects tutorial

You ever see that teaser for the Hunger Games Mocking Jay, the one with the white text slowly extruding. It looks great, and this is how to make that in Adobe After Effects.

If you have any questions just let me know in the comments.

Download this project file:

This file ONLY works in After Effects CS6 and NEWER. But would work best in adobe CC.

Great tuturial, I really like the effect. For some reason, on my camera shots that are closer to the letters, it looks very grainy and pixelated. I made sure the composition settings for ray-tracing were back to 10, and all of the layers are set to “Best” quality in the Switches/Modes check box. Am I just too close to the letters for them to be crisp? I don’t think I’m any closer than you got in the tutorial, but they look dramatically worse!
    Any ideas?

Hello Josh. I’m not totally sure what to tell you. If everything is as you say then it should look fine. The Raytrace 3d is using vector information to make the polygons so it should be perfectly fine all the way in at any closeness. The only thing that comes to mind is colour depth but that would cause banding and not pixelation.

Yeah, it’s weird. I’m using CS6, but I don’t think that would matter. I changed the color depth as well in my troubleshooting, but that wasn’t it. I’ll keep looking! Thanks for getting back to me.

Hey, I figured it out. It came to me like a blurry vision…it was the depth of field of the cameras, which I had enabled somehow. Looks nice and clear now!

Doesn’t seem to render correctly through Adobe Bridge. Testing now through AE to see if it’s any better. Somehow doesn’t render out the solids or something when through Bridge, hard to explain.

That sounds like how it usually happens. You’ll need to use the Render Queue to get those extruded solids and everything to render out.
