    Cheers Evan,

I am stuck newbie. The logo I want to use (black ‘g’ against a white background) it is not vectorised, so l got the jpeg and traced it in Illistrator. I then expanded the layer to break it up into individual object layers. When l use the alpha invert the logo turns black with a faint outline of the ‘g’. Where am l going wrong?

So you’re using the G to define the visible area of another layer? What is that other layer? It’s important to realize what exactly an alpha matte, or alpha inverted matte is doing when constructing a scene like this. Are you 100% on what that does to what layers and why?

Thank you for the prompt response. Your prescience questions prodded me to sit through a tutorial on track mattes and I found the solution to my problem.

In Illustrator, I saved both the positive *and* negative space in the file which I imported into AE. I’ve got my head around the fact that the background solid functions as the negative space of the original file.

    Warm regards from Montreal!
