Shape Layer Repeater (radial) – Adobe After Effects tutorial

Draw, animate, repeat. Always repeat. They say Pete and Repeat tried to amke flat style burst embellishments. Pete made like 3 keyframes, duplicated a bunch and was done before lunch. Who was left? Repeat. Okay I will. Draw, animate, repeat…

The shape layer repeater is a powerful and excellent tool that you should for sure know about and exploit often to make amazing graphics quickly and cheaply.

Same way one make about any preset I suppose. Select the properties you changed, save the preset. Is there a specific part about making presets that is not working for you? Also what have you tried and what happened when you tried it?

I tried and save the changed parameters as preset and when I applied that preset in other project it is not giving me the exact effect which I created. Some of the parameters are stays as it is…I created the exact project which you showed in this tutorial and then I selected all the key frames and save them as preset. Then I opened new project and created BG layer and then Shape layer and then applied the saved effect.but it was showing nothing…

Depends on what kind of “delay” you want to add. Can you be more descriptive about the desired effect?

I found this on a Google search– I had the same question. Say you wanted objects to sequentially scale in– there seems to be no way to control the amount of time between objects scaling in– it seems to happen automatically? I’m not even sure what the time offset is. A single frame? What if I want a single object to scale in, finish scaling in, and have the next object start once the last animation completed, etc? Is that a thing the repeater does? Thanks!

The repeater is not the best feature to make that happen.

Got it! I was trying to figure out if using the repeater is the best way to create something like the grid at :54 in the lower right hand side: https://vimeo.com/130841895#t=54 (I’m guessing sequencing layers then? There seems to be a granular control over when the individual squares pop in, but maybe not. Thanks! 🙂 )

Hi Evan, when I click to add a repeater, nothing appears. I can change the properties of the repeater but no repeated objects show on screen. 🙁

What exactly does happen? I’m going to need more info. Are there actually things for the repeater to repeat?

Ha, I feel silly now. Turns out I didn’t have a fill. I could see the outlines of my first image even though it didn’t have a fill, so I didn’t see the others even though they did exist. Adding a fill solved it. Silly me.

I would hope people use what they learn from the project file and tutorial to make something of value, rather than just using my work for their own financial gain. But it’s not expressly forbidden by any license agreement. I only hope people’s own ethical boundaries keep them in line. Maybe I should get some kind of explicit license agreement in place if this is going to be a thing.
